Lesson 1: 24 Sep 09

General stuff - number operators
positive and negative numbers (worksheet)
H/W - get hold of text book if you can and email me so I can put you on my mail list
look at worksheet on multiplying

answers to exercise sheets HERE

Useful links (will open in a new window) - BBC bitesize negative numbers revision

Lesson 2: 1 Oct 09

TOPICS: factors and multiples, powers CHAPTER 1

We covered:
factors, multiples and prime factors Ex 1A
writing number as product of prime factors Ex 1G
powers multiplying and dividing (simple stuff only) Ex 1D(some)

HOMEWORK: If you can get the textbook then look at the work we've done in Chapter 1 - that DOESN'T mean do the whole chapter!!!
links for this week:
two lessons on LCM and HCF look under > number > powers and integers >

Lesson 3: 8 Oct

TOPICS: Ratio and proportion CHAPTER 20

We covered:
BODMAS rules and using your calculator (WORKSHEET here)
Writing a ratio in its simplest form, and in the form 1: n
ratios where the units need changing Ex 20A qs 1-2, Ex 20B qs3, 4
dividing stuff up in a given ratio Ex 20C
direct and inverse proportion Ex 20D and 20E

HOMEWORK: Check through Ch 20 and try the review exercise at the end (answers to follow by email)

:
lots of stuff under > number > ratio and > number > proportion

NB the last section in mymaths proportion (direct and inverse proportion) is B/A grade stuff which we'll do later on, so DON'T try it unless you are really keen!

Lesson 4: 15 Oct

please remember... using the mymaths website is completely optional - you don't need it in order to pass the exam - it's just there to provide extra help if you need it!

TOPICS: Percentages CHAPTER 12

We covered:
the link between fractions, decimals and %
finding %s using a decimal multiplier
increasing and decreasing amounts using a decimal multiplier Ex12B
writing one amount as a % of another Ex 12C
harder stuff , not essential at this stage so give up now if you like! -
compound interest Ex12D
working backwards Ex12E

HOMEWORK: try SOME of the review exercise at the end chapter 12 (answers to follow by email)
Twenty Questions sheet HERE if you didn't get it in class

:
stuff under > number > percentages
Have flagged a couple of homeworks for you to try - but only if you WANT to!
You can have as many goes as you like at these.

Lesson 5: 22 Oct 09

TOPICS: Powers and standard form CHAPTER 26.1 and 26.2

We covered:
rules for multiplying and dividing powers, negative powers and zero powers REFERENCE SHEET HERE
Standard form - large numbers Ex 26B
Standard form - small numbers Ex 26C
sections 26.3etc are A grade stuff so you don't need to look at that (but we will probably cover it later)

HOMEWORK: you should be able to do questions 1-8, 18, 20 from the review exercise(answers to follow by email)

:
stuff under > number > powers AND > standard form
Have flagged a couple of homeworks for you to try - but only if you WANT to!
You can have as many goes as you like at these.

Lesson 6: 5 Nov 09

TOPICS: estimation and rounding, area and perimeter of simple shapes CHAPTER 16, 9.2 - 9.7

We covered:
decimal places and significant figures Ex 16A
upper and lower bounds Ex 16B
higher level calcs Review exercise ....NB Ex 16C uses algebra we haven't covered yet!
naming quadrilaterals, area and perimeter Ex 9C

HOMEWORK: have a look at review exercise 16 (answers to follow by email)

:
stuff under > number > accuracy and estimation
Loads here (but NOT trial and improvement YET). Have a look at the homework on significant figures

Lesson 7: 12 Nov 09

TOPICS: substitution in expressions and area of circles CHAPTER 5.1, 5.2, 8.1, 9.8 - 9.9

We covered:
substuting into algebraic expressions (plus BODMAS and neg numbers!)
Collecting up "like terms" Ex 5A, 5B
Expanding brackets ( the basics only) Ex 8A
Circumference and area of circle Ex 89D, 9E

HOMEWORK: have a look at what we did in the lesson and PRACTISE negative numbers
Review exercise 16 qs 10 - 12 should be OK but leave qs 134 on as they are harder (answers to follow by email)

:
stuff under > algebra > formulae
Look at Order of Operations, and Substitutions 1 and 2

Lesson 8: 19 Nov 09

TOPICS: beginning algebra and more area CHAPTER 8.1, 8.2, 10.1

We covered:
Revised collecting up "like terms" and basic factorising Ex 8A, 8B question 1
Basic solving equations Ex 10A (after q 27 there are "unknowns" on both sides- these are tricky and we need more practice )
revison of area

HOMEWORK: have a look at what we did in the lesson and PRACTISE negative numbers

:
stuff under > algebra > formulae >simple equations and shape > area > area of circles

Lesson 9: 26 Nov 09

TOPICS: beginning graphs and volumes beginning angles CHAPTER 2.1 - 2.5

We covered:
Plotting points and drawing straight lines from equations
converting a recurring decimal to a fraction Chapter 7.4
angles in a polygon, opposite angles etc
ALL THIS WAS AN INTRODUCTION - WE WILL REPEAT IT OVER AND OVER AND.........

HOMEWORK: read through Chapter 11, we will need this in a few weeks - don't worry about the graphs or angles til we've looked at it again.

:
stuff under > algebra > graphs > drawing graphs You could look through that lesson if you like, it gives nice clear practice of plotting points
